Job Description
Position Overview:
The Flagger is responsible for safely directing traffic through construction and maintenance zones throughout North Dakota. This role follows North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) standards and ensures a safe work environment for crews, motorists, and pedestrians on state highways, county roads, and local project sites.
Key Responsibilities:
Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices in accordance with NDDOT guidelines.
Safely direct vehicles through lane closures, one-lane operations, and roadwork areas using stop/slow paddles, radios, and approved hand signals.
Communicate clearly with other flaggers, equipment operators, and site supervisors to coordinate traffic movement.
Monitor road and weather conditions—adjusting traffic control setups as needed based on ND’s rapidly changing weather.
Maintain a strong safety presence while working near active traffic, heavy equipment, and oilfield or construction activity.
Report hazards, near-misses, or equipment issues to supervisors immediately.
Assist with site cleanup, moving cones, placing barricades, and other labor tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
Must be 18 years or older.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to various job sites across ND.
Ability to stand for long periods and work in all North Dakota weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, rain, and dust).
Strong communication skills and the ability to stay alert in high-traffic areas.
Ability to lift 30–50 lbs as required for traffic control equipment.
NDDOT-approved Flagger Certification preferred (training available for new hires).
Previous flagging, construction, or oilfield experience is a plus.
Work Environment:
Outdoor work on state highways, rural gravel roads, city streets, or oilfield access roads.
Exposure to traffic, noise, heavy equipment, and variable ND weather.
Work may involve long hours, weekends, and travel to job sites across the region.
Schedule & Pay: Full-time, seasonal, and project-based positions available.
Typical shifts vary based on jobsite and NDDOT project schedules.
Pay range in North Dakota: $15–$25+ per hour depending on experience and certification.
